Half a century after their epic Cup winners’ Cup title in Athens, AEK Athens are celebrating their 3rd European basketball title following their defeat of AS Monaco (100-94) in the 2017-18 Champions League final before a packed crowd of over 15,000 at OAKA stadium in Athens.
The Greek club had won their last Eurpean trophy 18 years ago when they lifted the Saporta Cup.
Christos Zoupas a veteran AEK basketball player, and member of the '68 team speaking on Athina984 fm described the feelings of fans: "We spent an amazing night, a stunning game that stuck to those who watched it either on the court or on TV. Rarely in a final do you see such a game. With regard to the Friday match it seems to have cleared the minds of players and they understood the grandeur and gravity of the jersey. It was a different AEK compared to the semifinal. It fought with greater passion. There was a lot of emotion and we have the chances to create a year for AEK. From obscurity and depreciation it reached the top. Makis Angelopoulos, and his colleagues deserve many congratulations. They again crowned AEK Queen.
