Featured Greek DefMin: The potential for cooperation with Israel in the defense sector is enormous

Particular reference was made to the strong ties that have been developed in recent years between Greece and Israel, as well as to the extensive cooperation that has been achieved in the field of defense, by the Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos on completion of his official visit to Israel.

According to Mr. Panagiotopoulos, during his meeting with his counterpart Mr. Naftali Bennet, the willingness of Greece and Israel to further develop their defense cooperation was reaffirmed.

Issues of equipment and current issues of cooperation in the field of defense - technology were also discussed.

The two Ministers referred to the added value of multilevel trilateral co-operation between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, and its contribution to the creation of security and stability conditions in the SE Mediterranean.

During the meeting they exchanged views on the security and stability challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, as well as ways to deal with them effectively.

Subsequently, the Minister of National Defense had successive meetings with representatives of the Israeli Directorate of Defense Equipment (SIBAT) and the Directorate for Development of Weapons Systems (MAFAT).

"I had the opportunity to meet with executives of this very powerful Defense Industry of this country and discuss the possibilities of further development of relations between the Israeli and Greek Defense Industry in this interesting, certainly, geopolitical context," said Panagiotopoulos.

"The scope for developing synergies, collaboration, and even cogeneration schemes between Greek and Israeli Defense Industry elements is really huge," the Greek Minister of National Defense added.

"Finally, I had the opportunity to visit the facilities of the Israeli Aviation Industry, where I was given an update on the unmanned aerial vehicle "Heron", which is being supplied to the Greek Armed Forces in order to be more actively integrated into their service structures and an opportunity to look closely at the highly advanced and developed Israeli industry at the level of development of unmanned vehicles, something that you understand is of interest to us and we also set as our strategic goal for the Defense Industry, he concluded.
