Mitsotakis clear message from Brussels: EU to show credibility in what we have agreed on Turkey
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Speaking shortly before the start of the Summit, the Prime Minister noted that "now it will be seen if really, if as Europe we are credible in what we ourselves have agreed. Pacta sunt servanda (s.s .: what has been agreed must be observed) ".
At the same time, Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined that the credibility of the EU is at stake and reminded that in October it was decided that if Turkey continues its delinquent behavior, there will be consequences.
"Here the stakes are very very clear: the credibility of the EU. At the October European Council, all the Heads of State and Government decision-making date will be this European Council, the December European Council. So now it will be seen if really, if as Europe we are credible in what we ourselves have agreed. "Pacta sunt servanda", he said characteristically.
The Prime Minister's entire statement
"In the extremely rich agenda of the European Summit, I single out two issues that are of particular importance.
The first concerns the pending veto by Hungary and Poland on the approval of the budget and the Recovery Fund. I believe that the compromise proposal that has been reached is moving in the right direction and that this issue, this backlog, will end today. As you know, Greece is one of the first countries to submit its own detailed plan on how to use the resources of the Recovery Fund and it is very important - taking into account the extent of the financial crisis - the money from the Recovery Fund fall into Europe's real economies as soon as possible.
The second issue that will concern us is the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and our relations with Turkey. Here the stakes are very very clear: the credibility of the EU. At the October European Council, all the Heads of State and Government decision-making date will be this European Council, the December European Council. So now it will be seen if really, if as Europe we are credible in what we ourselves have agreed. "Pacta sunt servanda".
