A Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) was found dead at Kremasti beach on Rhodes island on Monday, the Energy Ministry reported on Wednesday.

The 5.3m cetacean's death was caused by having swallowed a total of over 15 kilograms of plastic waste, it was added.

Veterinarians and marine biologists collected samples of the animal and sent them to the Aristotle Univeristy of Thessaloniki's Veterinary School.

In this case, "the large amount of plastic found in the whale's stomach did not allow it to feed properly, resulting in malnutrition and death," said the vet school's teacher Anastasia Komninou after the completion of tests.
