Athenians escape capital for Easter

Recession or not, Athenians are leaving the capital in droves for Easter holidays. Trains, planes and boats are at full capacity, while traffic in the national roads leading to the countryside is queuing up.

The climax of the Easter vacation getaway is on Good Friday, where traffic is expected to peak. The weather may not be ideal so far, but travelers were flocking the roads to the Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio ports today, where capacity was at 75% to 80%.

The Coast Guard and the police are on high alert, inspecting and advising travelers. They are advising those who plan to travel by boat to have their tickets in hand before they reach the ports, so they don't waste time in the confusion.

Starting today, there are 70 routes from the Piraeus port until Monday, with another 31 from the Rafina port and 23 from the Lavrio port. From last Saturday until yesterday, 61,419 people, 7,369 vehicles and 1,423 motorbikes have boarded boats in Piraeus.

According to flight bookings, from this Thursday until Tuesday April 22 there will be 2,245 arrivals and departures to the El. Venizelos Athens International Airport, 74 of which will be charter flights. Paris, Alexandroupoli and Chania.

The railways are also busy these days – 30% more traffic than usual, to be exact. More cars are added to trains to accommodate the passengers. Still, some problems are expected on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, when the train employees are going on strike.
