ADEDY Rally Against Layoffs

Civil servants in their thousands rallied today in downtown Athens from Klafthmonos square to the ministry of government reform on Vasilisis Sofias Avenue.

The rally called for by civil servants union ADEDY against government plans to cut thousands of jobs in the public sector.

The massive protest march included public hospital staff, teachers, tax officials, and ministries' staff and shut down traffic all around Syntagma square and surrounding areas until late afternoon.

The protesters reached the ministry of government reform chanting "Pavlos lives and guides us", referring to Pavlos Fyssas recently murdered by a Golden Dawn member in Nikaia.

At this time, the rally has dispersed and the metro station at Syntagma has opened, after being closed for security reasons by police earlier today.
