Wanted Georgian Politician Released On Bail, Patra

The former director of the Georgian Interior Ministry’s department for constitutional security, David "Data" Akhalaia, has been released on bail in Greece.

In March, the Tbilisi City Court sentenced Akhalaia to almost four years in jail in absentia for abuse of office in a case related to the beating of police officers in 2005.

Data Akhalaia, headed the Department for Constitutional Security at the Interior Ministry. His brother Bachana "Bacho" Akhalaia served as minister of internal affairs, from July 4, 2012 to September 20, 2012, Head of Penitentiary Department (2005–2008) and Minister of Defense (August 27, 2009–July 4, 2012), resigning on September 20, 2012, amid protests against torture and rape at Georgian prisons.

Their father, Roland Akhalaia, was a chief prosecutor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svanenti region in western Georgia and the current member of the Parliament of Georgia.

Greek media reported in April that Akhalaia had been detained in the city of Patras for carrying fake identification papers.

Akhalaia's lawyer told the Imedi TV channel on June 2 that his client was released from custody in Greece after his family had at last managed to transfer 100,000 euros for bail.

Akhalaia's possible extradition to Georgia remains pending, as the Patras appelate court (pictured) opined that there is insufficient evidence do far.
