Cabinet appoints judicial leaders

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras chaired a cabinet council meeting to appoint the new leadership of the country's high courts. Single property tax wasn't discussed.

There was speculation that this cabinet meeting would hold substantial government decisions regarding the mess with the single property tax, particularly since government VP Evangelos Venizelos announced earlier that the first installment of the tax was being postponed for late September. Still, the burning issue was not discussed.

During the brief meeting, which lasted only 35 minutes, Samaras directed ministers to notify cabinet secretary Fotis Kaimenakis about the number of days they would be absent and their whereabouts, after having guaranteed that their respective ministries will operate as normal under deputy ministers and secretaries general.

New appointees include Athanassios Koutroumanos as president of the Supreme Court (Areios Pagos), Nikos Angelaras as president of the Court of Audit, and Michalis Zymis as president of the Council of State.
