Crete - 5.8R earthquake claims one life

Α worker was pulled out dead from the ruins of the church of Profitis Ilias, outside the village of Arkalochori in Heraklion, Crete, after the roof collapsed on him during the 5.8 Richter earthquake that shook the island.

However, the airborne landing of the Germans during World War II under the code name "Unternehmen Merkur" (Operation Mercury) against the island did not frighten the Cretans, who put up an unexpectedly strong resistance against the numerically superior Germans.
