AHEPA Announces Scholarship Endowment Recipients

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading membership-based association for the nation's millions of American citizens of Greek heritage and Philhellenes, announced the establishment of a new scholarship endowment, The George A Paterakis Scholarship, and the scholarship's first recipients, announced Supreme President Phillip T. Frangos.

"Our immigrant forebears understood the importance of attaining a quality education and sacrificed greatly so their children could achieve the American Dream," Supreme President Frangos said. "Today, with the cost of education skyrocketing, the pursuit of one's academic dreams may seem daunting. AHEPA is redoubling its efforts to ensure as many opportunities as possible exist to help students achieve their dreams."

He continued, "AHEPA is deeply grateful to the generous benefactor of this new endowment, who understands the importance of education and the positive impact AHEPA has had in the community when it comes to providing educational opportunities for our youth."

The Paterakis Scholarship will be administered by the AHEPA National Educational Foundation and awarded annually to a student(s) of Greek American heritage, or a Philhellene, who has applied and been admitted into a graduate program. Applicants from the Midwest Region of the United States will be granted first consideration. To be selected for a scholarship, students must have a demonstrated willingness and academic ability to succeed in their graduate studies.

Inaugural Scholarship Awardees Announced

Four students were selected to receive The George A Paterakis Scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year. They are: Nicholas Theros, Michigan; Tamika Tompoulidis, Ohio; Evanthia Arianas, Illinois; and Persephone Kriner-Sotos, Indiana. The awardees were chosen by the AHEPA National Educational Foundation from all applicants who submitted an AHEPA scholarship application for the 2014-2015 school year.

"We congratulate the inaugural recipients of the George A. Paterakis Scholarship and wish them all the best in their graduate studies," Frangos said.
