The Washington Oxi Day Foundation Honors James Foley
U.S. journalist James Foley, who lost his life at the hands of ISIS, will posthumously receive the 2014 Oxi Day Award, for his unprecedented courage while defending democracy and freedom.
President Bill Clinton nominated the fallen journalist and is scheduled to offer the award to his parents at the Fourth Annual Washington Oxi Day Foundation Gala on October 23rd. The event will be held at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.
As the Washington Oxi Foundation stated on its website, "The Award is named after the one-word answer the Greek Prime Minister gave when Axis Forces requested surrender at 3:00 am on October 28, 1941 — "Oxi" ("No" in Greek). Hitler had just crushed 15 countries leaving Great Britain and Greece alone standing against Hitler. (Russia had a non-aggression treaty with Germany and America was still neutral). Yet heavily outnumbered Greece became the first country to defeat the Axis Forces moving President Franklin Roosevelt to say, 'When the world had lost all hope, the Greek people dared to question the invincibility of the German monster...'".
Foley's award will be presented with high-level U.S. officials, foreign dignitaries, journalists, and Greek-American leaders in attendance. His brothers will be present during the commemoration, along with their wives. James Foley was abducted on November 22nd, 2012 in northern Syria and held under his control until his execution, on August 19th, 2014.
