AHI Questions The Washington Times' "TRNC" Relationship

Washington, D.C.'s American Hellenic Institute (AHI) has sent a letter of concern to The Washington Times Board Chairman Thomas McDevitt.

In the letter, the AHI has requested a meeting regarding the newspaper's relationship with the illegal "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" territory. AHI President Nick Larigakis penned the letter after the Times' Advocacy Department published five different "TRNC" articles on September 30th, 2014.

The President stated, "We were deeply disturbed by The Washington Times' role in the distribution of blatant propaganda on behalf of an illegal entity, the 'TRNC'...We have several questions about the purpose of The Washington Times' Advocacy Department and the newspaper's relationship with the 'TRNC' through this department."

The American Hellenic Institute is located in the nation's capital and was established in 1974. As stated on its website, AHI strives to: "Upholding the rule of law in matters of U.S. foreign policy, particularly in our nation's dealings with Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey.

In 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied Cyprus, AHI advocated a profoundly simple response—enforce U.S. law. At the time, the Executive Branch refused to enforce federal laws that prohibited Turkey's aggressive use of U.S.-supplied arms and equipment".
