NYC's Landmark Athens Cafe Shuts Down

Astoria, New York's landmark Athens Cafe has closed its doors, with differing reports stating what type of venue may take its place.

According to the Astoria Post, the proprietors of Bareburger have suggested plans to utilize the property. Industry sources claim that the organic burger chain acquired a lease from its owners, who want to create an eatery independent from its chain. However, We Heart Astoria has reported that sources have said a pizza spot may be put in its place.

What is certain is that the windows of Athens Cafe have been completely covered in tan paper, with an electrical permit sign displayed. Its website is also down. Athens Cafe had been in existence for over 15 years and was a benchmark site for the Greek-American community of New York City.
