Australian Council of Trade Unions Praises SYRIZA

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has voiced its support on SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras' electoral victory.

ACTU President Ged Kearney spoke with Greek-Australian news portal Neos Kosmos, about lessons learned from SYRIZA's monumental victory and how Australia's own implemented austerity measures are having a negative outcome on the nation.

Kearney stated, "Austerity policies such as those pursued in Greece and advocated here at home by the Abbott government have been shown to drive down living standards and worsen inequality."  The union chief added that Australia should follow SYRIZA's lead by implementing standards, "that reduce inequality through job growth, increased wages and a strong targeted social protection floor."

The ACTU President claimed that Australia's union movement and the broader global union movement, "congratulates Greece on the election outcome." Kearney commented that SYRIZA should, "take the opportunity to rebuild its economy and set the country on a fair and sustainable pathway".

The ACTU was established in 1927 in Australia and now represents 46 affiliated unions and the concerns of approximately 2 million employees across the nation. The Australian Council of Trade Unions is founded on enhancing the quality of work and living standards for Australia's workforce.
