Greek American police officer, Anastasios Tsakos, died tragically in New York on Tuesday morning (April 27, 2021), when a drunk driver rammed him with her car.

The 43-year-old father of two died in the early morning hours on a Long Island highway when he was called to help in a fatal car accident.

When he reached the spot, an uncontrolled car driven by a drunk driver dragged him and killed him. 

The 33-year-old driver of the car, who was driving without a license, was arrested and is facing charges of negligent homicide, driving with a confiscated license, as well as using a car under the influence of alcohol.

In a post on Twitter, the Archbishop of America Elpidoforos referred to the offer of the police officer to the community.

"The tragic death of Anastasios Tsakos, a police officer from the New York Police Department, during his service and service to his fellow man, reminds us that all police officers, firefighters and medical staff risk their lives for us. "His memory is eternal," he wrote.

New York Mayor Bill Deblazio spoke of a police hero. "A heroic policeman who did everything right in his life for us is dead because of someone's else negligence."
