Today Marks Good Friday

Greek Orthodox Good Friday is the tribute to Jesus' Passion account, that involves his betrayal, trial and crucifixion.

Historically, today's religious observance starts with apostle Judas' betrayal of Jesus in the Gethsemane garden. After, Jesus is tried before the Sanhedrin council, King Herod of Galilee and the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, resulting in his death by crucifixion.

Today's Greek Orthodox services center on the Gospel account scriptures of the Passion story. The twelve Gospel readings are intertwined between various sectors of Good Friday's service. They begin with Jn 13:31-18:1 and end with the final gospel's account of the sealing of the tomb and the setting of the watch, in Mt 27:62-66.

Christians around the globe are observing Good Friday; the Eastern Orthodox and Western Church calendars coexist this year.  Greek Orthodox Churches across the United States will offer Matins of the Burial and Lamentations with the Procession of the Sacred Tomb services this evening.
