Greek Tourism in Athens

Translation By Lisa Darilis

A journey to Syntagma - Ermou - Monastiraki - Acropolis seems to have the highest concentration of interest for tourists visiting Athens, Greece. Some choose Athens as a place to stay, as it seems to them exceptional, significant, and noteworthy, but it has also shown to be a shifting mobile center in the trade triangle.

The area of Ommonia shows vigorous activity, as there are alot of hotels situated there. It is also a gateway to historical sites and the trade center of the Greek capital. The broad neighborhood of Gkaziou - Kerameikou, also lures in alot of tourists, as it is the final destination of the "big archeological walking tour" of Athens. Other areas of the city bustling with tourists are Zappeiou, Kallimarmarou Stadium, and the Stiles Olympiou Dios (Olympeion).

Research on Athenian tourism was conducted by the National Federation of Greek Trade (ESEE) from August 2013 through October 2013, the results for which were published in their report "Consumer Models of Tourism and The Trade Market of Athens and Piraeus."

This research has shown that the total daily expenditures of tourists (excluding travel and hotel expenses) comes to 64 euro. This total daily expenditure includes going out to restaurants, bars, supermarkets, transportation within the city, and entrance fees to cultural areas (museums, etc.). About 30 euro a day was spent on necessities (food, etc.) and about 30 euro on buying goods from merchants.

The results gathered on the revenue from tourists coming off of cruise ship are of even more interest. These cruise travelers tend to belong to a higher income bracket in comparison to the everyday tourist of Athens. Their ships usually arrive in the evening and remain in the dock for about six hours, as passengers exit the ship and visit the city's sites until it's time to board again. These tourists have spent a total of 67 euros, out of which about 15 euros were spent on restaurants and 44 euros on shopping. The latter expense is indicative of the higher income bracket of the cruise passengers versus the typical tourist.

Research Statistics From Tourists Coming From Cruises Ships

In reference to the tourists coming from cruise ships and the statistics of their characteristic spending, there are notable differences with the typical bulk of tourists in Athens. The advantage of women is limited, although age plays an important role, as cruise ship passengers tend to fall within a higher age bracket than the typical tourist.

The range in ages of the cruise ship passengers is 45-54 years old. Nine out of ten of them, however, admitted to belonging to a higher age bracket.

Cruise ship tourists have also shown to belong to a higher income bracket, which is concentrated between the annual amounts of 30,000 Euros to 70,000 Euros.

Research Statistics From the Common Tourist

Women have shown to have a weaker presence, in comparison to male tourists, in this group as well. Majority of the male tourists hailed from Holland (about 62%) and majority of the females (about 63%) from France. The various range of ages for this group of tourists fell between 25 to 34 years old.

This group also had nine out of ten tourists placed themselves into a higher level of educational bracket. Let it be noted that the analyses of educational levels of the subjects used for this research did not show significant differences.

In relation to the annual revenue of tourism, it shows a balanced allocation of spending within the categories of income starting from below 15,000 euro to income exceeding 70,000 euro, with a higher concentration in those who fall within the lower income category.
