Cyprus president blasts the blatant hypocrisy of Turkey's Erdogan
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Nikos Christoulides spoke of Recep Tayyip Erdogan's hypocrisy during his speech at the UN General Assembly.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus called on his Turkish counterpart to end the occupation, claiming that, "from this very stage yesterday, Mr. Erdogan proclaimed peace and responsibility to the whole world. He accused others of crimes that Turkey itself commits daily," while denouncing "selective sensitivity and hypocrisy to the utmost extent."
Cyprus, said Mr. Christoulides, is “a pillar of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East”, citing specific examples of its regional contribution and explaining that, among other things, Cyprus has provided infrastructure and support for the evacuation of foreign nationals from conflict areas, such as Sudan, Lebanon, Israel and Iran. In addition, the Cypriot government developed the “Amalthea” sea corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza following the Hamas attack on October 7, he noted.
“The sea route was reactivated last week,” Mr. Christoulides told the UN General Assembly, adding that Cyprus worked with the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the United Kingdom for the successful implementation of the project.
Pointing out the need for UN member states to take courageous decisions in the face of international developments, the President of Cyprus presented the island as an example of responsibility, security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean through specific initiatives.
He assured that the Republic of Cyprus will demonstrate this responsibility during the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
