Christodoulides condemns "provocation" as Turkish Cypriot Forces confront farmer in UN Buffer Zone

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has condemned a "provocation" by Turkish Cypriot forces, after soldiers ordered a Greek Cypriot farmer to leave his field inside the United Nations-controlled buffer zone.
The incident occurred near the village of Deneia. According to Cypriot authorities, Turkish Cypriot soldiers, accompanied by a military vehicle, confronted the farmer as he attempted to tend to his fields. Members of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) were reportedly also present.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Christodoulides said he had been fully briefed on the incident.
"From the very first moment, all necessary steps were taken… to ensure that such incidents are not repeated," he said.
Mr. Christodoulides added that such actions are "certainly not positive" at a time when diplomatic efforts are underway to create the right climate for resuming reunification talks, which have been frozen since 2017.
The Cypriot government reportedly lodged a formal protest with UNFICYP, demanding an investigation and assurances that such escalations will be prevented.
The buffer zone is a demilitarized area that separates the Republic of Cyprus from the Turkish-occupied north.
