Joint naval exercise between Greece and Cyprus off Larnaca and Limassol
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A joint naval exercise between Greece and Cyprus was held in the sea area of Larnaca and Limassol, with the participation of the Greek frigate "HELLI" and the Offshore Patrol Vessel "IOANNIDIS" of the Cyprus National Guard Naval Command.
The joint training took place within the framework of the Tactical Exercise "NIKITIS DIMITRA 2026". According to the Cyprus Ministry of Defense, the scenario included tactical movements and maneuvers, technical exercises, as well as communications exercises between the two warships.
Interoperability is the goal
The joint training between Greece and Cyprus was deemed particularly beneficial, as it contributes to improving interoperability and the exchange of know-how for the execution of naval operations. Athens and Nicosia are testing in practice how quickly and effectively they can operate together at sea. The exercise was observed at sea by the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Theodorou, who congratulated the crews of the two vessels for their training and professionalism.
In a wider defense environment
The exercise took place during a period of intense defense activity in Cyprus. A few days earlier, Nicosia hosted the Informal Meeting of the Ministers of Defense of the European Union, focusing on European defense readiness, Ukraine, maritime security and the new European Security Strategy.
In the same context, the Republic of Cyprus signed with France a Status of Forces Agreement, known as the Status of Forces Agreement, which regulates the presence and activity of military forces of one country on the territory of the other. The agreement is part of the constant defense upgrade of Cyprus-France relations.
The joint exercise between Greece and Cyprus was not a demonstration, but is part of the constant effort to strengthen the operational readiness of the National Guard and coordination with the Greek Armed Forces. The presence of a Greek frigate in an exercise off Cyprus simultaneously sends a clear message of cooperation, deterrence and presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The timing is important, as Turkey continues to treat the Republic of Cyprus as an annoying detail on the map, while seeking a role and privileges in European defense programs.
Nicosia, for its part, is attempting to strengthen its deterrent capacity through three parallel moves. Close cooperation with Greece, deepening relations with European powers such as France and more active participation in the debate on European defense.
