European Parliament recognizes Cypriot female victims of Turkish invasion

The European Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing, for the first time, Cypriot women and girls as victims of crimes committed during Turkey’s 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
Lawmakers passed the measure 575-33, based on a report by Greek New Democracy lawmaker Eleonora Meleti.
The resolution condemns Turkey’s invasion and ongoing occupation, recognizes sexual violence as a weapon of war and calls for recognition and rehabilitation of victims, reparations, survivor support and accountability from Turkey under international law.
Addressing the Parliament in Strasbourg, Meleti described testimonies from women she met during a FEMM (Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality) mission to Cyprus, saying their rape “continued through stigma, isolation, marginalization, rejection, loneliness.” Supporters called the vote a political and moral vindication for Cypriot women.
