The authorities of Cyprus have arrested a 44-year-old man with British and Azerbaijani citizenship for spying on the air base in Akrotiri on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, according to Sky News.

According to the report, the arrested man is named Rashad Sultanov and was arrested on Friday, July 17.

Sultanov was arrested as part of an investigation conducted by the London Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) regarding incidents that occurred at the British air base in Akrotiri between May 11 and June 22, 2025.

As reported by Sky News, the 44-year-old Azerbaijani allegedly spied on the base and then passed information to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

The arrest is said to have been made following a prosecution by the British prosecution under the National Security Act.

The head of London's Counter-Terrorism Service said the case "demonstrates that we can apply the National Security Act abroad when British military bases are allegedly the target of hostile actions by state actors."
