France - Iran Top Meeting

The French presidency announced today that president Francois Hollande will be meeting his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, on Tuesday, in NY, on the sidelines of the UN general assembly.

The meeting, taking place after a request by Mr. Rouhani, will focus on Syria and Iran's nuclear program .
In the announcement the French presidency states "we hope that Iran will commit fully, along with other factors, in seeking a real political transition in Syria."

Earlier on Friday, however, French foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Laliot had assessed that Iran was too involved with the Syrian regime to be a trustworthy interlocutor.

Paris believes that it can accept "services offered by Iranian authorities" in resolving the Syrian crisis, if Tehran acknowledges the international agreement of Geneva signed in June 2012, according to which authority in Syria should be transferred to a transitional government recognized by both the opposing sides.
