US State Dept's Francis Fannon at trilateral East Med discussion: Islands have EEZ, continental shelf; provocations must stop

The United States has "been very consistent in calling to stop all provocative actions that could undermine investment confidence in the East Mediterranean region" and affect political stability, US State Department Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources Francis Fannon said on Tuesday, speaking at a virtual roundtable discussion "East Med and the trilateral partnership (Greece, Cyprus, Israel) and its role in regional energy security and economic cooperation in the age of Covid-19 and beyond".

Islands and mainland have same rights to EEZ, continental shelf says US State Dept spokesperson

An agreement on maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea signed by Turkey and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya is "unproductive" and "provocative," a US State Department spokesperson commented, adding that Ankara’s claims are contrary to international law, which stipulates that islands have the same rights as mainland regions to an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.
