After sailing for 12 days in the Mediterranean Sea, the Olympic flame that was lit in Ancient Olympia on April 16 is to reach the port of Marseille on Wednesday, carried by the three-masted sailing ship "Belem", which was built in 1896, the year that the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens.
The sailing vessel Belem departed on Saturday morning at the port of Piraeus and began sailing towards France, carrying the Olympic Flame ahead of the Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris this summer.
The Olympic flame started its trip to Tokyo after its lighting at the stadium in the archaeological site at Ancient Olympia, in the presence of President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos and IOC President Thomas Bach, as well as member of Japan's government.
