Uber Plans Athens Service
The popular transportation app Uber has set its sites on Greece, and will offer rides by private cars as an alternative to taxis.
However, Hellenic cab drivers are not pleased. Uber has created three types of Athenian car services that include UberTaxi for taxi drivers who own a taxi, UberX for non-professional drivers that have a four-door large or medium-sized automobile, and UberBlack for drivers who own a SUV or black car and have a professional license, according to Kathimerini.
As Greek law prohibits fare-based rides by non-professional drivers, the UberX category may face challenges. Uber also plans to increase its services to other parts of Greece including Patra, Santorini, Rhodes and Thessaloniki.
The ridesharing service was established in San Francisco and is a smartphone app that immediately links ride seekers with fee-based drivers. Uber customers use its app to access rides and track the whereabouts of their reserved automobile's exact location. Uber has not added Athens to its list of European cities on its website as of yet.
