Central Archaeological Council Plans Spinalonga Preservation
Spinalonga has long been regarded as a former leper colony, however strategies are underway to revamp the Greek island.
Now, sixteen structures have been deemed an archaeological site. A plan to strengthen and tidy up the buildings has been administered, in efforts to attract tourists to the island.
On Tuesday, The Central Archaeological Council sanctioned two examinations, concerning tourist and structural improvements. The Greek island has experienced a recent increase in visitors and has been included in UNESCO's cultural monuments list.
The Spinalongan architectures are presently in bad condition, due to the leper period that took over the region between 1903 to 1957. In Greece's 2014 peak season, the island will be open to tourists between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., which encompasses 33 archaeological museums and sites.
