Cypriot Leaders Restart Solution Discussions
Today marks the relaunch of Cypriot solution talks after conducting a summer hiatus, with a strong emphasis on property issues.
Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish-Cypriot chief Mustafa Akinci both agreed during their last meeting, that respect is required, concerning individual property rights. UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor to Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide confirmed the two leaders strides, regarding a united island.
Eide stated the establishment of an, "independent Property Commission mandated to resolve property claims based on mutually agreed criteria. The Property Commission shall comprise of equal number of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot members," according to Parikiaki. The Repulic of Cyprus' Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides described the upcoming discussions in the current political climate, "allow us to be cautiously optimistic".
Eide traveled to Cyprus on Monday and is predicted to meet Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot negotiators, prior to today's meeting with both Anastasiades and Akinci. Discussions were restarted this past May, with both leaders. Cypriot President Anastasiades previously withdrew from participation in the solution talks, after Turkey illegally entered the Republic of Cyprus's Exclusive Economic Zones with its "Barbaros" vessel.
