Greece's METLEN: Historic milestone with the first waste incineration at the Protos ERF plant in Britain
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
METLEN has successfully carried out the “First Fire on Waste” at the Protos Energy Recovery Unit, which it is developing for Encyclis in Cheshire, NW England.
The First Fire on Waste is a significant milestone, as it confirms that the state-of-the-art unit has now entered the final stages of hot commissioning.

The Protos ERF, when fully operational, will have the capacity to process 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year, generating up to 49.9MW of electricity on a 24-hour basis, an amount sufficient to power 90,000 households.
The process supports the circular economy by recovering resources from household and commercial waste left over from recycling, the so-called “residual waste”. In addition to generating electricity, the ash from the combustion process is converted into inert materials for construction, while ferrous and non-ferrous metals are also recovered for reuse.

METLEN acted as a strategic contractor for the project, undertaking the design, equipment supply and turnkey implementation on behalf of Encyclis, in collaboration with Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH.
The project was the first Waste to Energy for the Company, with multiple technical challenges and difficulties and the achievement of the milestone of the first combustion was made possible due to the established expertise of METLEN's human resources, despite the time and cost challenges that arose during the implementation and to which the company has referred extensively.

The first waste combustion in this complex project confirms the advantages of the merger of the former M Renewables and M Power Projects under the single M RESET platform. In a particularly demanding environment for the European construction and energy infrastructure sector, with material price increases, supply chain pressures and increased challenges in the implementation of complex projects in recent years, METLEN proves through MRESET that it is one of the few companies that can implement complex thermoelectric projects, with methodicality and perseverance despite adversity, earning the respect of the market.
The reorganization and additions of high-quality human resources to M RESET are a guarantee for the continuation of the company's long tradition in the sector. At the same time, before undertaking any new thermoelectric project, all those actions that will ensure execution “on time and on budget”, as has always been the company's motto, will have been preceded.

METLEN has maintained a strong presence in the UK energy market for over a decade, having completed or currently implementing over 90 projects, including photovoltaic parks, battery energy storage systems, grid projects, as well as advanced natural gas plants ensuring the stability of the electricity system, a Synchronous Condenser installation, as well as two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations on the flagship Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project.
