- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Despite the fact that Greece is mainly surrounded by sea and is considered a maritime country, drowning incidents in 2014 showed a marked increase over 2013.
Only during the three days of the Dekapentagousto weekend (14,15 and 16 of the month) 16 people drowned in various parts of Greece. According to the latest official data of the Greek Coast Guard Coast Guard, from June 1 to July 27, 150 people drowned, while in the same period last year, 101 people drowned.
From July 28, 2014 until August 17, 2014, 26 drowned in different parts of the country. Overall, the number of people drowned from early summer until now has reached 176 people.
Each year, the headquarters of the Port Authority launches a campaign for primary school children in order to protect human life at sea and reduce accidents and drownings. Authorities also report that every summer, the second cause of death, after road accidents, is accidental drowning.
