Weather paralyzes Greece

The adverse weather conditions with snowfall and strong winds have created a series of problems throughout the country, once again proving the state mechanism's lack of preparadness.

The national motorways are open in several parts despite the intense snowfall. However, due to gale-force winds the traffic on Egnatia motorway was interrupted from West Komotini interchange until Iasmos interchange on both directions for trucks. Road chains are necessary in most of the regional roads.

A ban on ferry departures has been imposed from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio to the islands of Cyclades, northeastern Aegean, Dodecanese and Crete while the ferry link from Piraeus to the islands of Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and Poros are carried out with closed type ferries. Piraeus-Salamina link is open as well as Kavala-Thassos, Igoumenitsa-Corfu and Igoumenitsa-Lefkimmi (Corfu). The ferry link Alexandroupolis-Thassos is conducted according to the captain's judgement. The ferry-links Kyllini-Zakynthos and Kyllini-Cephalonia, Aghia Marina-Nea Styra, Volos-Sporades islandas and Kavala-Prinos are closed. Coast Guard advises passengers to call the local tourist agencies before getting ready to leave.
