Varoufakis' spaghetti monster

With extremely ironic style website Politico comments on a diagram presented by the Greek Minister of Finance.

The site states that Yanis Varoufakis is known for the peculiar policy he follows, but his last lecture went ... too far. “The Greek finance minister is known as a bit of a policy wonk, but the latest lecture broke new ground,” says the site

Therefore, it is stressed that today the Eurozone finance ministers are likely to get another lecture from Mr. Yanis Varoufakis, as the Greek Minister is expected to try again to succeed in shaping an agreement that would save Greece.

And the story continues in a very ironic style. During Thursday's Business Summit in Brussels, Mr. Varoufakis reached a full academic krescendo, through a lecture entitled “A blueprint for Greece’s recovery in a consolidating Europe,” accompanied by a slideshow presentation full of scatter plots and flow charts.

However the slide entitled “Looking Forward — Synergistic Reforms,”was what drew all eyes and of course not only did not pass unremarked, but caused much comment. The slide illustrates the potential of the Greek economy to growth as what the site calls a "spaghetti - monster" full of a dozen terms and colorful arrows pointing in many different directions.

Indicative of reactions is the comment cited by Politico, by professor of economics at Harvard, Robert Barro, who said: “Quite a hilarious document. This diagram is an obvious part of the Greek campaign to establish its reputation for insanity. Such a stance can be quite effective in bargaining with the IMF and other ‘serious’ international organizations.”
