ECB intercedes for Stournaras
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Rapid developments are afoot as emerged from attacks of the government against Yannis Stournaras as on Wednesday night there was a resounding intervention from the ECB via the Bloomberg agency.
At the time when negotiations are (by confession of Yanis Varoufakis) at the most difficult point the ECB is taking a stance by supporting the Greek central banker and sending a message to the government.
As reported, officials from Frankfurt appear troubled by the government's attacks on the person of the central banker of Greece.
ECB staff emphasize their concern about the criticism against Yannis Stournara while also indicating that questioning the independence of the Bank of Greece is a problem as well.
They point out that in case the situation gets worse they may issue a formal warning to the government.
The ECB and governor Mario Draghi is "the main player" in the liquidity problem faced by Greece, as only the stability mechanism is that (and even that sparingly) which provides some financial breathers for the country.
