Prosecutor seeks probe into Greek MP's finances

The charges relate to allegations made by two former associates of Mitropoulos, who said that he had failed to pay them their share of fees for a past case several years ago, for which Mitropoulos allegedly earned about one million euros.

Investigation of their claim showed that the sum had not been declared by Mitropoulos, who is now facing charges of tax evasion and money laundering as a result.

According to sources, Mitropoulos had repeatedly contested the accuracy of the accusations with evidence submitted to the SDOE financial crimes investigative unit and has also countered with legal action in the administrative courts.

In spite of this, the legal proceedings initiated by the financial prosecutor must still go ahead, since the amount of tax that the Parliament vice-president potentially owes amounts to 940,000 euros.
