Kalamata: The Final Frontier

Independent Greeks deputy Vassilis Kapernaros submitted a proposal in parliament on Wednesday that would see Kalamata International Airport transformed into a rocket launch site to capitalize on space tourism.
Although not a joke, the proposal for the creation of an "International Center for Space Tourism in Kalamata" prompted a rather discouraging response from the government.
Deputy Development Minister Notis Mitarakis noted that no interest has been expressed to date in investing in Greece's aerospace industry.
Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said that the proposed project would demand significant investments in infrastructure in the hundreds of millions of euros, adding that the operation of such a site would have to be approached with caution "in view of European and international regulations."
