Turkey increases tensions setting out exercise areas in Aegean
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Turkish Naval Hydrographic Service issued NAVTEX 1410-1411-1412 / 17, which earmarks three areas in the Aegean for live fire exercises for almost all of 2018.
It is characteristicthat on the second day of Christmas, Ankara, in the context of another live fire exercise, "again" illegitimately set out an area to the east of Kos, according to Navtex 1403.
At the same time, it also announced an anti-submarine warfare exercise to the west of Lesvos, between 27-28 December.
According to ANT1, Athens, in the face of Turkish provocation, is changing tactics.
The General Staff decided not to respond with anti-NAVTEX demarches, but would proceed to demarches and interventions to the Spanish NATO commander of the service, who is responsible for the whole region.
Of course, the Turks can not "bind" regions in the Aegean for such a long time, and their move is more aimed at intensifying the challenges facing Athens than in the essence of the military exercises themselves.
