Featured Top Turkish journalist seeks asylum in Greece

A top Turkish journalist, working for a well-known and large-circulation daily newspaper, crossed a few days ago over the river Evros to Greece and asked for political asylum because he was being prosecuted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's regime.

According to exclusive information of Evros-news.gr, he is a top executive of the Turkish newspaper Yeni Yassam, who crossed from the Turkish side to the Greek bank of the river Evros and handed himself over to the Greek authorities in the area of Feres. This was after the Epiphany feast, and the police said he was persecuted by the Erdogan regime, sentenced to eight years in prison and asked for political asylum in Greece and in other European countries.

The International Union of Journalists was also immediately interested, which contacted the Greek authorities in order to help the Turkish journalist through the bureaucratic procedures followed in such cases. Indeed, a few days after he entered Greece, he was transferred to the Orestiada Prison Reception Center, where he applied for political asylum.

His case has been kept secret during this time because of his persecution by the neighboring country. The case was taken over by a lawyer from Alexandroupolis whose name has also not been announced, and he has managed to quickly and efficiently handle all the necessary procedures.

After the asylum application was submitted, the Turkish journalist was released and left Evros. However, his presence at the Fylakio center and the very careful handling made it possible to learn some facts about the case.
