Adopt a Greek school

Eugenia Kakadiaris, a member of the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest (CC-SW) is a 17-year old Houstonian student, that has envisioned a way to help struggling students in Greece fulfill basic needs like that of nourishment and heat in the winter.

The Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest has initiated "Adopt-A-Greek School" as a project to raise funds so that students can receive in-kind donations. The scheme will use donations raised in the USA from citizens, corporate sponsors, or organizations, to buy tangible goods that will be distributed through partnered firms like the Papadopoulos cookie company that are then distributed to the schools that have been accepted to receive such aid.

The way the scheme works is that needy schools apply for funding through a simple application process, with the relevant student council or parents' association acting as the applicant and requesting in detail the support needed and the reasons. To assure that the goods reach the requisite recipients, organizations at the school submit published letters that relay exactly what was given and to whom. Thus the program aims to empower the students to do things themselves.
