Gavdos: Bathers repel arriving immigrants
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Those in Gavdos are at their limits as a new wave of illegal immigrant arrivals by boat from Libya has been recorded in the past 24 hours.
The images recorded last Saturday at Sarakiniko beach, on the northern side of Gavdos, are indicative of the situation.
As shown in a video posted on TikTok, bathers who were on the beach entered the water and with their hands pushed the boat full of illegal immigrants that attempted to approach land towards the open sea.
According to information, a Frontex vessel was located off Sarakinikos that received the illegal immigrants and transported them to the port.
At the same time, on the southern side of Gavdos, protothema.gr recorded the "footprint" of the arrival of illegal immigrants on the island.
The following images are from Tripiti beach, which has been filled with boats used by illegal immigrant trafficking rings to transport dozens of people to Gavdos.
Plevris: Crete will be decongested in the next two days
According to the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, as of yesterday, Monday, "the decongestion of the island has begun and within two-three days everyone will have left" with transfer to facilities indicated by the ministry.
As he explained speaking to ERT, newly arriving illegal immigrants are under administrative detention or restriction of freedom, as the suspension of asylum is in effect for those who cross the border illegally: "These are not accommodation facilities, but places of confinement, as these people are considered prisoners."
Regarding the fact that approximately 850 arrivals of illegal immigrants were recorded over the weekend, Mr. Plevris said that it is being examined "whether it is cyclical or whether it is linked to aggressive movement by smuggling rings or other instrumentalization purposes."
