Featured Women in the army for the first time: Three-digit number of applications for 12-month voluntary service, points for recruitment in the Public Sector are a lure

While draft dodgers now have a second chance to serve in the Armed Forces, there are many Greek women who are flirting with the possibility of voluntarily enlisting in the first batch, with a deadline for participation on March 31, 2026, after the possibility provided institutionally by the "Charter for the Transition of the Armed Forces to the New Era".

Specifically, article 275 of the latest bill of the Ministry of National Defense provides for the first time in the history of the modern Greek state the opportunity for women to train in the Army, fulfilling their military obligations, to the point where they can even be selected as candidates or probationary reserve officers (REO).

In fact, the effort that the Pentagon is making institutionally to fill the barracks with… the scent of women was accompanied by an audiovisual communication campaign, which was a huge success on social networks. According to information, the relevant video of the General Staff of the Army on the voluntary enlistment of women recorded 40,000 views on Instagram and 41,000 views on Facebook respectively, indicative of the great interest that is developing day by day among Greeks and Greek women around this pioneering institution.

The Armed Forces' dedicated video for Women's Day also had a similar impact, recording 40,000 views on Instagram and 51,000 views on Facebook, a number of views that attest to the fact that the female public is beginning to flirt with the idea of engaging, either voluntarily or professionally, with the military. Although official data on the first wave of female volunteers in the Armed Forces have not yet been made known, as the relevant announcement is still open and the relevant applications are "running", however reliable information wants the number of applications to be consistently in the triple digits, with an upward trend in the last 24 hours.

Invitation for Voluntary Conscription of Women

Much more so when the duration of military service for female volunteers is 12 months, while it is addressed to Greek women aged 18-26, of physical fitness category I/1 or I/2 and with a clean criminal record, who are simultaneously provided with a series of incentives for their professional development.

200 positions have been provided specifically for the first wave of female volunteers, while their classification will be done by April at the Material Warfare Training Center in Lamia. In addition to their high morale which is marked by their classification, at the same time a series of benefits and incentives have been provided by law in order to increase female interest. In particular, voluntary military service will offer conscripts additional points for recruitment in the Public Service, constituting a comparative advantage, while their time in the Armed Forces will be recognized as prior service, strengthening their CV.

Furthermore, after the end of their twelve-month service, it is envisaged that they will be reclassified as Short-Term Reclassification Soldiers (OBA) or recruited as Professional Soldiers (EPOP).

In the field of administrative logistics, conscripted female volunteers are provided with free access to military hospitals and clubs, while provisions have also been established for the recruitment of graduate conscripted women as civilian personnel (nurses, administrators, etc.) in positions in the Armed Forces.

Additionally, upon completion of their service, women will be registered in the Army Reserve until the age of 40, maintaining their strong ties with the army, contributing to the strategic goal of 150,000 active reservists.
