Greece to Help Restore Historic Kyiv Monastery Damaged in Russian Attack

Featured Greece to Help Restore Historic Kyiv Monastery Damaged in Russian Attack

Greece has announced that it will help restore the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex after it suffered significant damage during a recent attack on Kyiv. Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated that Greece will fund the preparation of restoration studies for the UNESCO World Heritage site and strengthen cultural cooperation with Ukraine.

The nearly 1,000-year-old monastery, founded in 1051, is one of the most important centers of Orthodox Christianity and a symbol of Ukraine’s spiritual and cultural heritage. During the attack, the roof of the Dormition Cathedral caught fire and extensive damage was reported across the complex. Ukrainian authorities say the site was struck during a large-scale Russian missile and drone assault, while Moscow denies responsibility.

As part of the initiative, Greece also plans to promote a cooperation memorandum between the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture. The agreement would include specialized training programs in Thessaloniki for Ukrainian conservators and restoration experts.

The damage to the monastery has drawn international concern because of its historical, religious, and cultural significance. Restoration efforts are expected to take years and cost millions of euros.
