Mystery Pink Lake Puzzles Residents of Igoumenitsa Beach in Greece

A small lagoon near Makrygialos beach in Igoumenitsa has turned a striking pink-fuchsia color, prompting questions from local residents and officials, according to local outlet Thespro.
The unusual coloring was captured in photographs of the small body of water in the area, though the cause remains unclear.
Authorities are expected to collect water samples for laboratory testing to determine what triggered the change.
Similar phenomena have occurred elsewhere in the world, often linked to algae blooms, bacteria, or high salinity levels that produce pigment-altering reactions in shallow, stagnant water — though officials have not yet confirmed the cause in this case.
Results from the testing are expected to clarify whether the coloring poses any environmental or health concern.
