Mazonakis doctors ordered to Κorydallos prison as detention order cites fatal delays, ignored alarms

Dr. Ilias Theodoropoulos and his wife, Dr. Ioanna Gaka, face a felony charge of homicide with possible intent through omission.

The detention ruling found the couple performed serious medical procedures at their Karneadou Street clinic without proper licensing, equipment or required pre-treatment screening, and that both were fully aware of the risks involved.

The ruling was particularly damning on how they responded once Mr. Mazonakis's condition deteriorated during plasmapheresis: prosecutors said the pair ignored warning alarms and continued the procedure as if nothing alarming had occurred, then delayed calling emergency services.

Neither doctor accepted responsibility during their marathon interrogation, instead blaming paramedics from EKAB, drawing sharp pushback.

Their lawyer said the couple would immediately appeal the detention order, calling the upgraded charge "entirely unjustified" and alleging their procedural rights were violated.

Mr. Theodoropoulos, the clinic's owner, began a hunger strike following the ruling and remained calm, while Dr. Gaka reportedly grew visibly agitated, repeatedly asking police to let her shower and change clothes before calming down later. Two of the couple's three children have visited them.

Investigators are expected to question additional witnesses, including a hypnotherapist who confirmed receiving photos Dr. Gaka sent him of Mr. Mazonakis during the procedure, though he declined to explain why, saying the reason would emerge Monday.
