British tourists find what they want in Greece: New MoU and revenue explosion in the Greek economy

Featured British tourists find what they want in Greece: New MoU and revenue explosion in the Greek economy

The British market is changing the game in tourism with the United Kingdom recording a doubling in arrivals and higher spending. A resounding “yes” to off-peak travel - What does the Ministry of Tourism see in the memorandum of cooperation signed in London?

The British tourist wants three things on his trip: relaxation (mostly near the sea), having more favorable weather conditions than those prevailing in his homeland and finally being able to enjoy a different destination with various cultural events or whatever else is included in a city break.

By satisfying all three of these basic needs in Greece, the British market not only remains one of the most influential categories for incoming Greek tourism, but is considered a game changer for the coming years.

Already, the performance for June records an increase of 2.8%, while for the period January-April 2026, a more than doubling of receipts and an increase in arrivals by 50% has been recorded, compared to the corresponding period in 2025, with the United Kingdom being one of the leading inbound tourism markets for our country, with an upward trend in both travel receipts and travel traffic, especially in the months outside the peak season.

Specifically, 67% of Britons vote for Greece for enjoyment and relaxation, 52% for better weather, 45% to experience a new place and culture, 36% for luxury / pampering yourself and others" and 31% to explore the countryside or live an adventure.

When asked what kind of vacation Britons plan to take in the next twelve months, the largest percentage answers anything related to the sea and beaches, followed by a slightly smaller percentage of travelers who are motivated by a city break.

As for where British visitors intend to stay, 81% of those surveyed said they would stay in a hotel, while the list of favorite destinations includes Santorini, Skiathos, Corfu, Crete, the Argosaronic Gulf, Mykonos, the villages of Epirus and Attica.

At the same time, economic growth in the United Kingdom is estimated, according to data from the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (INSETE), at 1.1% for 2026, compared to a forecast of 1.2% by the European Commission and 1.3% by the IMF.

At the same time, private consumption is forecast to increase by 1.1%, compared to 0.9% in 2025.

The above is also supported by Greece's travel receipts from inbound tourism from the United Kingdom, which amount to approximately 3.7 billion euros in 2025 (15.8% of total revenues, including those from cruises), increased by +18.5% compared to 2024 (3.2 billion euros).

New Memorandum for Greece and the United Kingdom - Which emerging tourism categories it promotes

The market dynamics are also strengthened by the decision of the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, to sign with her British counterpart, Stephanie Peacock, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation between Greece and the United Kingdom.

Following a series of discussions with British tourism market players, the two sides proceeded with a five-year MoU, with the possibility of automatic renewal.

Among other things, it provides for the development of joint initiatives in the areas of sustainable tourism development, investments, innovation and digitalization, tourism education and vocational training, as well as the exchange of know-how and best practices.

On Kefalogianni’s agenda is the fast track development of emerging forms of tourism, such as gastronomic, wine tourism, mountain tourism and agrotourism. These are categories that, together with sports tourism, will constitute additional incentives for the increase in British tourists throughout the year.

In addition, it is planned to establish a joint working group to monitor the implementation of the Memorandum and further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

After the signing of the MoU, Minister for Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, stated:

“The United Kingdom has historically been one of the main countries of origin for visitors to Greece. "Travel flows continue to increase, further strengthening the strong bonds of friendship that connect the two countries," commented Olga Kefalogianni, emphasizing that this Memorandum of Understanding establishes a modern framework for cooperation that goes beyond tourism.
