Athens Stock Exchange: Explosive rise, catalyzed by MSCI upgrade and expectations for the Middle East
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
April is off to a good start for the Greek stock market, which is being positively affected by the upgrade to developed markets decided by MSCI. At the same time, expectations for a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran war are boosting investment sentiment in all markets, with Athens being no exception.
Specifically, in Wednesday's session (1/4), the General Index is up +3.05% and is trading at 2,127.97 points, having so far moved between 2,079.97 (low of the day) and 2,154.71 points (high of the day).
With a landmark announcement, MSCI, the most stringent index rating agency in the world, officially announced its decision to upgrade the Greek capital market from the status of "emerging" to that of "developed market".
The decision was made after thorough consultation with the international investment community (buy side and sell side), which recognized that the infrastructure of the Greek market has now fully converged with European standards. According to MSCI, this development reflects the progress of the Greek authorities but also the institutional perception that the country is now an organic part of the coherent investment area of the developed markets of Europe.
According to the timetable, the transition will take place in one stage in May 2027, during the regular review of the indices. Although there were suggestions for implementation in August 2026, MSCI chose 2027 to facilitate the transition of portfolios, offering intermediate “snapshots” of index simulations.
This upgrade, which follows in the footsteps of FTSE Russell and S&P Global Ratings, is the latest “certificate” of exit from the sovereign debt crisis. Strategically, this move coincides with the integration of the Athens Stock Exchange into the Euronext group, creating a strong network that is expected to attract quality funds that invest exclusively in developed economies.
