ECHR Demands Turkey Pay 90 Million Euros to Cyprus
Today, the European Court of Human Rights demanded that Turkey pay 90 million euros to Cyprus, regarding the 1974 invasion and its consequent division.
The act stated that the time period since the divide, did not take away from any of the serious associated responsibility. Turkey now has to pay out 30 million euros to relatives who have missing family members, and 60 million euros for "the enclaved Greek-Cypriot residents of the Karpas peninsula", as reported by the Huffington Post.
Turkey is the only nation in the world that recognizes the Turkish northern territory of the island. The payout has occurred during the same time period that both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, are involved in new reunification discussions. The European Court of Human Rights has determined that the Cypriot government will decide how to award the damage fees to its citizens.
