Union of Greek Ship Owners Unhappy with Income Tax Code
The Union of Greek Ship Owners plans to discuss foreign seaman taxation methods with the government, regarding Greek-flagged vessel employees.
The controversial issue is not popular with the Union. As confirmed by the nation's new Income Tax Code, non-Greeks workers on Hellenic ships are now ordered to pay Greek income tax. Prior mandates kept them exempt.
According to Kathimerini, shipping representatives claim that this is the first Greek occurrence, where non-citizens will be taxed. As reported by sources, the first implemented step would have to involve gaining residence permits, as the majority of workers come from nations outside the EU. These acts may result in vessels joining registers other than Greece.
