Former Thessaloniki Mayor Denies Embezzlement Charges
Thessaloniki's previous mayor Vasilis Papageorgopoulos denied embezzlement charges today, of 17.9 million euros.
Today marks the forty-first day of his appeal trail, that will determine if he will be behind bars for life; this will be the harshest sentencing ever in the nation, concerning a public official in a monetary crimes case.
As reported by Kathimerini, the former mayor described, "I have been in prison for one year, three months and eight days and I still can't wrap my mind around it".
The 66-year-old politician added, "I can't explain even to myself why I'm in prison. But the heaviest burden - even more so than my incarceration - is the sullying of my good name, which I have built over 50 years with toil and trouble, and which was shattered by an unjust judicial decision".
