Pangalos Shoots Greece in the Foot... Again
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The notion that the US ambassador in Athens was a victim of surveillance by Greek intelligence services during his tenure as foreign minister was put forward by PASOK historic cadre Theodoros Pangalos.
Speaking to private broadcaster Vima FM, the former foreign minister responded to an article by "Der Spiegel" in which the US Embassy in Athens is a veritable hive of monitoring equipment and services.
As Mr. Pangalos noted, Greek officials learned nothing, but he was amused to hear about the transcripts and how US officials called him expletives, which the he mentioned on air, but which we cannot repeat here.
The veteran politician, known for his immoderate statements, also noted that Greek services also monitored US diplomats in Ankara.
Mr. Pangalos noted that the statute of limitations had run out for such misdeeds, and that surveillance had stopped once the Americans got wind of it.
