FYROM violently deters refugee crossing

The police in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fyrom) used tear gas and flash and bang grenades to disperse and prevent thousands of refugees, primarily from syria, which is overall in no man's land at the border between Greece and fyrom. Several wounded refugees brought to hospital on the Greek side.

The refugees had spent the night in the open and have this morning made several attempts to continue towards central and northern europe. Fyrom has also ordered the country's armed forces alongside police to prevent refugees from contining north.

Tension had heightened earlier on Friday, after the decision of Skopje to block the border for immigrants.

According to Greek police sources from Kilkis, two injured will be moved to Polykastro. Correspondents had also reported four wounded during the morning clashes.
